Dr Janice Thean M.B.B.S (Hons), FRANZCO is a cataract surgeon and general consultant ophthalmologist who sees both adults and children. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologist. She has been in both public and private practice since 2005.
Dr Thean graduated with first class honours in 1996 from Monash University. Having developed a keen interest in ophthalmology ever since she did her fifth year elective at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, she proceeded to win the Undergraduate Ophthalmology Prize exam in 1995. Dr Thean commenced her ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 2001. After completing her ophthalmology fellowship examinations in 2003, she spent a further year at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital gaining further experience in small incision cataract surgery. During this time she was also involved in high level research and teaching of ophthalmology trainees. She has published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals and has held consultant positions at the RVEEH and the Western General Hospital in Footscray.
Dr Thean's main interest is cataract surgery including correction of astigmatism using Toric lenses but in addition, also treats retinal conditions like Macular Degeneration, vein occlusions and diabetic macula oedema with anti-VEGF injections using Lucentis, Eylea and Avastin. She also treats a large cohort of glaucoma patients including performing MIGS (istents). Dr Thean is fluent in both written and spoken Mandarin, Cantonese, Foo Chow and Malay.
Dr Thean currently practices privately in clinics located in Glen Waverley and Box Hill. She operates privately at the Vision Eye Institute in Box Hill and the Victoria Parade Surgery Centre in East Melbourne.
